Android One Is Slowly Moving To Mid Range Devices
Google’s Android One platform was an approach to provide Pure & Updated Android Experience in low budget devices. We have seen quite a few Android devices here in India and as I just mentioned, those were low budget devices with underpowered hardware. Though, as Google promised, they actually delivered quite a few software updates to those devices. However, after that we didn’t heard of Android One devices that much. I mean sure. they were alive in some other countries but, the hype kinda died.
Now Google wants to rebuild the hype & this time they’re focused on Mid Range devices. They made this statement clear in a recent launch event where Xiaomi Announced the Mi A1 that is priced at 14999 in India. Now, let’s focus on the main specifications of this device for a while,
- Display: 5.5 inch Full HD IPS Dispaly
- Processor: 14nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (2.0 GHz Cortex A53 x 8)
- GPU: Adreno 506
- RAM: 4 Gigabytes
- Internal Storage: 64 Gigabytes
- Rear Camera: Dual 12 MP (Regular + Telephoto) shooters for upto 2x Optical Zoom
- Front Camera: 5 MP
- Battery: 3080 mAh
And this is the device itself,
So, yeah this device has quite impressive specifications & build quality for the price. This clearly indicates towards the new path that Google has chosen for Android One.
John Gold from Google confirmed that Google will now expand their Android One line up to Mid Range devices & the Mi A1 is just a starting point for them. In the near future we will see many more devices having Mid-end specs & running on the Android One platform.
As expected, these Android One devices will get software updates regularly so, fast Security patches & fast OS upgrades. Though we don’t know how many OS upgrades these devices will get. Possibly One or Two but, let’s see. The good news is, Android 8.0 Oreo will hit the Mi A1 before 2107 ends. So, that’s real quick.
So, can Android One make a comeback ? We’ll we don’t know but, looking at the aggressive steps from both Google & their partner OEMs, the future doesn’t seem that bad.
