Consumer Reports Removed Microsoft Laptops And Tablets From Their Recommended List – Microsoft Responded

Consumer Reports recently removed their “recommended” designation for all Microsoft Laptop & Tablet products. This includes the Surface Book, Surface Laptop & Surface Pro variants.

According to them, Microsoft Surface Laptop & Tablet products’ have an estimated 25% breakage rates in just two years of usage.

In their declaration post Consumer Reports wrote,

” To judge reliability, Consumer Reports surveys its subscribers about the products they own and use. New studies conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center estimate that 25 percent of Microsoft laptops and tablets will present their owners with problems by the end of the second year of ownership.

The decision by Consumer Reports applies to Microsoft devices with detachable keyboards, such as the new Surface Pro released in June and the Surface Book, as well as the company’s Surface Laptops with conventional clamshell designs.“

So, this news was pretty shocking for all of us. I guess none of us actually expected such a report about Surface Products from Consumer Report themselves. Microsoft however has given a reply to this report. In a post under Windows Blogs, Microsoft stated,

” While we respect Consumer Reports, we disagree with their findings. Surface has had quite a journey over the last few years, and we’ve learned a lot. In the Surface team we track quality constantly, using metrics that include failure and return rates – both our predicted 1-2-year failure and actual return rates for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are significantly lower than 25%. Additionally, we track other indicators of quality such as incidents per unit (IPU), which have improved from generation to generation and are now at record lows of well below 1%.

Surface also ranks highly in customer satisfaction. 98% of Surface Pro 4 users and Surface Book users say they are satisfied with their device*, and our Surface Laptop and new Surface Pro continue to get rave reviews. “

So clearly, Microsoft isn’t agreed with Consumer Reports at this point. They look quite confident on their Surface line-up & claim that they’re tracking the issues & they haven’t got similar results at all. They also added,

“We are proud of our products and the amazing things our customers are doing with them. We stand firmly behind the quality and reliability of the Surface family of devices, and I can confidently tell you there has never been a better time to buy a Surface.“

Now, if you’re asking us, we don’t really know who is right or who is wrong but, till this thing comes to a conclusion we can’t really get a clear answer anyway.
