The Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, first announced the promise of extending social interaction to another dimension with the Metaverse on a Twitter thread a while ago which read: “the Metaverse will be a place where we play and connect in 3D”

The Metaverse as a subject of conversation and speculation particularly exploded after the Facebook name rebranded in October last year to Meta. Mark and his entire research and development team are totally invested in building this project dubbed the future of social networking. 

So far, giants in the gaming industry have rallied together to manifest the dream of the Metaverse and secure their own piece of it in the near future. 

The anticipation of the Metaverse is quite huge. It is a trending topic across various social platforms and within many crypto communities and beyond.

What is the Metaverse?

Narrative Behind the Metaverse 

The word “Metaverse” was first used in 1992 by the author Neal Stephenson in the book “Snow Crash” to refer to a virtual environment with realistic structures where avatars modeled after humans meet. 

In the following years, the concept of the Metaverse first proposed by Neal in his novel appeared in several fictional works, both in literature and TV. One of the most recent adoptions is in the best-selling book, Ready Player One, written by Ernest Cline, which was later adapted into a movie directed by Steven Spielberg. 

Additionally, game adaptations bearing close resemblance to the concept of the Metaverse have surfaced in the past decade. At the forefront of this movement are: Epic games with Fortnite, Mojang Studios and the classic Minecraft 3D polygonal world, and Roblox. 

Features of the Metaverse 

Unfortunately, people often mistake these aforementioned virtual 3D universes for the Metaverse. Although these platforms share a common characteristic with the Metaverse in terms of exploring virtual landscapes with user-controlled avatars, the Metaverse is much more expansive.


While many confuse several stand-alone games as the Metaverse, truly, these applications will only become fragments that make up the entirety of the Metaverse. Fortnite and Minecraft are exclusive universes, in the sense that while a player can traverse the full length of one game, they cannot cross over to another. 

The Metaverse promises to be a tent that will integrate several virtual spaces into one big universe. On the Metaverse, users can easily walk from the virtual space in one game to another with their avatars. 


The capacity for the Metaverse to infinitely scale up makes it all-inclusive. For an implemented virtual world to be characterized as the Metaverse, it must have the technology to accommodate numerous individual virtual worlds and connect them together in one wholesome digital habitat. 


One of the blessings of the Metaverse is real-time interactions. While current social media platforms boast of instant messaging and the likes, it isn’t really as continuous as chatting with a friend in person.
