So, recently we made an article where we compared the ASUS ROG GX501 with the Acer Triton 700 based on their Hardware & Features. Today we got a chance to get our ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501VI Hands Once, we thought that we shall also give our first impressions on the device. So, let’s get started…

THE DESIGN

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus has an all metal unibody. It has a lot of Brushed Aluminium all over the device & it’s almost Black. There is a Golden Accent on the Trimmed Edges & an Orange scheme on the Rear Fan Grills.

It’s a pretty straight forward looking hi-end design. This Laptop has more of a Stealth & less of a Gamer look what I found kinda cool. The keyboard & trackpad are shifted to the front making the space for a deck that has holes for better airflow. The Screen is 15.6 inches and the bezels are kinda thick as the overall hardware needed a lil bit more space expanding the width side of the deck.

If you’re curious, the ROG logo on the back does light up with Red LEDs. Anyway, the most striking fact of this design is definitely the thinness & the lightweight of the device. I guess we need to dig in the highlighting features at this point. So, up next let’s talk about the features of the ROG Zephyrus.

THE HIGHLIGHTING FEATURES

The features on the Zephyrus are quite interesting. As I was talking earlier, the Zephyrus is actually quite thin at 16.9 mm & it weights just 2.25 Kilograms what makes it the world’s thinnest & the lightest laptop with a GTX 1080 graphics card packed inside. The way how ASUS achieved it was using NVIDIA’s Max-Q approach. If you’re interested to know more about Max-Q you can read the comparison article that I made earlier. You can find the link below at the end of this article. Other main hardware components include a Kabylake Core i7-7700 HQ, 24 Gigabytes of DDR4 RAM & 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD.

Anyway, another cool feature that caught our eye was the Trackpad. It a little weired in position but, it can actually switch from Trackpad mode to a dedicated Numberpad mode with just a single click on the dedicated key on the top of the Trackpad.

Anyway, as it’s a high end gaming laptop, we also expect it to have a great screen with a high refresh rate right ? Well, the Zephyrus comes with a 120Hz Panel that has NVIDIA G-sync Enabled & the color accuracy seemed pretty good as well. The resolution is 1080P integrated into a 15.6 inch IPS Display. If you wish to game in 4K though, you can connect an external 4K monitor with the included Thunderbolt 3 Port.

The last feature that I need to mention is that the Keyboard has customizable RGB backlighting. ASUS bundles a software that can be used to configure the keyboard lighting as the user prefers. Anyway, that kinda wraps up our initial hands on for the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501VI.

OUR INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

We were already impressed with what ASUS & NVIDIA did with the ROG Zephyrus & now after spending some tone with the device, we think it’s pretty amazing. It’s definitely not for everyone though as it costs 2,99,990 INR in India & 2699 USD in the USA. But, for people who have that budget and want a thin & light but, powerful gaming laptop, the Zephyrus might be a good option.

If ASUS sends a review unit, we will be doing a Full Review & after that we can tell you how the device actually stands up in real life usage. But, our early impressions are pretty good & the Zephyrus right now looks a pretty desirable gaming laptop.

Anyway as I have promised earlier, I’m leaving the link for the Zephyrus vs. Triton 700 comparison article below. You can go through it for a better understanding of this whole Max-Q thing & get a clear idea for both devices.
