ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser

ASUS is one of the leading smartphone brands & one of their known series is the Zenfone 2. The Zenfone 2 series is known for their camera. I have been using Zenfone 2 Laser from more than a month and have tested every detail of this phone. After testing the product in detail, I have found the following Pro & Cons.

Pros:

  1. Good graphics performance as compared to the price
  2. Amazing camera clarity

Cons:

  1. Takes a lot of time to charge (3 hours)
  2. Speaker at the back gives low output

ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser comes with a 5.5-inch IPS Display having TrueVivid Full-Screen technology with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. This phone is pre-installed with Android 5.0 Lollipop and the Zen UI makes it much better. It has a Qualcomm 64-bit Quad Core processor with Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916). It has a DDR3 2GB RAM and a storage capacity which can be expanded up to 128GB. It has a 5 MP front and 13 MP rear camera which has a 5 element autofocus lens, which assures the best picture quality. It has a Wi-Fi version 802.11b/g/n and a 4G LTE. It has a 3000mAh.

Display:

ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser comes with a 5.5-inch HD display with 1280×720 pixels resolution. It has a Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which assures your phone to be scratch proof. The TrueVivid technology allows your display to give the best and naked eye experience. Very few might know that this TrueVivid technology helps to enhance your battery life because this technology consumes less energy at the maximum performance display. It has a 72% screen to body ratio.

The display has a color depth of 32 bits/pixel, which is quite better than a DSLR. It has a Refresh rate of 60Hz, i.e. more than 24 frames per second, which ensure to give you much better video and image performance.

After going through the display test, I didn’t find any defective pixel. The Gamma detection test was quite fine, which was between 2.0 – 2.3. The multi-touch counter test gave a score of 10 that means the display senses 10 touches sensor at a time.

When I ran the brightness & contrast test, the Zenfone 2 Laser it did pretty well as compared to other smartphones on the same range. Even at the 50% brightness, you get the best of brightness and contrast for 48%.

Overall this ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser has an extraordinary display as compared to other smartphones at the price range. It gives a flagship display quality at more than half price of a flagship model. All thanks to the TrueVivid technology that enhances the display performance.

Design & Built:

The design & build of the Zenfone 2 Laser is really awesome. The 5.5inch phone fits so perfectly in your hand. Among all the 5.5-inch display phones, this is one of the best smartphones to have. It is not the thinnest phone, but it is one of the most comfortable once.

The Zenfone 2 Laser, in fact, the entire Zenfone 2 series has a similar, but a unique design that makes it comfortable. There is no volume or lock button at the side, which does not disturb while you are on a call or using it for a selfie. The Zenfone 2 Laser has the lock and power off button at the top and volume button just below the rear camera. The volume button also works as the selfie trigger. At the bottom, it has a Micro-USB port for charging and a 3.5mm headphone port.

The first impression of the ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser will make you think as if it is a flagship model, but it’s a budget phone having flagship performance. The plastic build quality is tough that can bear few falls. It has a Gorilla Glass 4 display that enhances the durability of the phone. Gorilla Glass 4 is one of the best displays. It has a Dual SIM card support (micro SIM).

The ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser comes in the following color variant:

  1. Premium UV Coating
  2. Black
  3. Ceramic White
  4. Red
  5. Shree Gold

Camera:

Zenfone 2 Laser has a 13 MP rear and 5 MP front camera, which is surprisingly one of the best camera phones. Apart from giving the best clarity image & video, ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser is loaded with a lot of camera features. Features like Auto, Manual, HDR, Beautification, Super Resolution, Low Light, Night, Depth If Field, Effect (Where you can try different effects), Selfie, GIF Animation, Panorama, Miniature, Time Rewind, Smart Remove, All Smiles, Slow Motion & timelapse.

As the name suggested Laser, it has the laser auto-focus having a 5-element auto-focus lens with the best Auto Focus at 0.3 seconds.  The phone gives outstanding clicks & videos that easily beat a lot of flagship smartphone cameras. The Zenfone 2 Laser camera has a lot of features that give you a lot of options to click. The rear 13 MP camera with laser autofocus gives the best-focused clarity. The Auto-Focus of the Zenfone 2 Laser is one of the bets Auto-Focus, which gives you an instant focus in just 0.03 seconds, which no other DSLR or Smartphone gives.  The Low Light and Night vision mode was quite decent. I have found that it gives the best low light picture, but gives an average result at the night vision mode. When set to manual mode, you get options to set your ISO and other elements. If you know how to use your camera manually, then you can get the best of pictures.

More Gallary:

The front 5MP camera is quite decent but is not that mind blowing compared to the Zenfone 2 Selfie. The 5MP front camera (Selfie camera) gives a vibrant & sharp color that is best for your Profile Picture. The selfie panorama is one of the coolest features that allow you to take a picture of your group selfie without missing any on your friend.

Overall the Zenfone 2 Laser camera is one of the best camera phones. It gives the best performance and provides with raw images that help you to add effects without pixelating it.  Apart from that, the phone has the flagship camera feature, at the low budget price.

Battery:

Battery life has now become one major aspect to consider before buying any smartphone. The Zenfone 2 Laser has 3000mAh Li-Polymer removable batteries and has an amazing battery backup. After testing it for months, I have found that the talk time battery life is 6 hours.

During Wi-Fi testing, I found that the Zenfone 2 drains the battery easily, but not comparatively fast.  Battery at 5% on Wi-Fi last for almost 45 minutes & without Wi-Fi it lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes. Hence, we can say that the battery backup of this Smartphone is comparatively better than other brands on the same range.

One thing that I really want to highlight about the phone is the charging time. The Zenfone 2 Laser takes a lot of time to get charged, which really annoys. It takes around 2 hours to completely charge your phone’s battery.

Overall this phone beats al other phones in terms of battery life.

Sound:

The most common thing that you do on a phone is listening to music. Here’s where sound testing comes. We have played tons of genres through YouTube, Music player and through speakers & it really gives a decent result. Yes! The sound will matter depending on the headphones, but the basic processing needs to be better so that the sound amplifies properly and gives you the best output.

On the headphones, the sound was quite pretty well, but not mind-blowing. The test was done on ATH C-101, which is the basic model by Audio-Technica & Beats Solo HD. On the ATH C-101 when I compared the sound with A8 and Zenfone 2 Laser, I found that the A8 has a better mids, where the Laser is not good at mids, but few tweaks can help you improve it. Zenfone 2 Laser was quite impressive on giving a balanced sound as compared to A8. Overall it was a decent experience on the headphone.

Testing the sound on Beats Pills speakers was quite extraordinary. Not like the A8, but the Zenfone Laser was quite impressive and that is all because of the ASUS AudioWizard. Heavy bass being Beats Pill’s problem, the Zenfone 2 Laser could not perform to reduce the base and give a perfect balance sound.

The speaker of this phone is not that impressive but is quite loud and clear. It does have a flat sound, but once surprisingly the phone does not give muddy sound on full volume.

Performance:

The Zenfone 2 has a 2GB RAM installed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which ensures better performance. I have installed games like DH5, Space Marshals Card Crawl and many more. All these high-end games play really smooth in the Zenfone 2 Laser. The only problem that I found during the game performance test was the low graphics but hardly lags while playing.

The battery performance was quite impressive, but the only problem I faced was the charging time. Initially, when working on the camera feature, I found that it gets abruptly closed. The only solution that I found was to restart the camera application.

Verdict:

After using it for a while, my feedback about this phone is quite positive. ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser is quite a decent phone at a decent price. Games work fine but don’t expect to get a high graphics performance, because it has a very low graphic, which is not for high gaming performance. If you are looking for the best camera phones for a low price, then this is the perfect option for you.

hi… i am confused between newly launched redmi note 3 and zenfone 2 max… plz help . 🙂

    1. geeksnipper says

Note 3 and Zenfone Max both are battery phone, but Zenfone Max has a 5000mAh battery and Note 3 has 4000mAH battery. Both are a decent performing phone, but Zenfone take the lead on battery with 1000mAh…

I would suggest you to go with the Zenfone Max because of the higher battery life.
